God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.

Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude (Selah) [vss 1-3]

A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it.

The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts! The lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude (Selah) [vss 4-7]

Come, see the glorious works of the lord: See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” The lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude (Selah) [vss 8-11]

For the choir director: A song of the descendants of Korah, to be sung by soprano voices.

(Psalms 46:1-‬11 NLT)

Trouble comes in many forms. It's felt both internally and externally. Some troubles are easier to resolve than others. Pop psychology tells us not to worry about what we can't control, but we do.

We worry about the economy, the environment and global warming, and we fret over national and international violence. But really, what can we do about such things?

This psalm gives those who trust in God three assurances in the face of such worries beyond our control.

First, we don't hide our head in the sand, we trust in God as our refuge—our shelter in times of trouble. He is our strength, the one who watches over us, so we do not need to fear as others do.

The presence of God, like a mighty river will sustain us and fill us with joy, even when turmoil exists around us.

Then we're reminded to be silent—still—and know God is sovereign over all. His presence brings peace even within a time of war. Even when thoughts and feelings battle within us.

I often go down to the ocean and watch the waves break and roll into the shore, even when it's stormy. I'll step barefoot into the edge of the water and watch, as the water flows around my feet.

I sense God's presence and peace in the midst of the power of the ocean. He is my refuge and strength. He washes away all my worries when I trust in Him. ©Word-Strong_2016
