Cliches are so....cliche! And yet so many are used and overused. Why? Because talk is cheap. I know, that's a cliche on its own but it's true.
Thoughts are expressed in words but words are empty when left hanging in the air. If we say, "I'll call you," or "I'll pray for you," but never do, these are empty words.
How long is forever? When does it start and when does it end? It doesn't. This could be a question from a child but forever is a hard concept to grasp.
Our lives are governed by time, so it's difficult to comprehend eternity. Our life begins at conception, then birth, and ends with our last breath and burial.
It's common to all of us. It's referred to as the darkness of the soul. The expression is linked to a 16th-century poem written by a Spanish monk.
The dark night of the soul is more than depression or a crisis in life. It is related to a crisis of faith that leads to hope and meaning in life.
While in it, it's easy to focus on the darkness itself—a time of spiritual depression—but there's light at the end of the tunnel when we turn our hearts to God.
Life and history are cyclical. All of Creation reminds us of the cyclical nature of life on earth. As Solomon wrote and Shakespeare repeated, "There's nothing new under the sun."
What's the purpose of this repetition and cyclical nature of life? Is there a purpose to it? Why did God implant this into His Creation?
One of my earliest impressions of the existence of God came during a lunar eclipse. As I looked up into the starry night sky, my dad told me of the thousands of galaxies stretched out in every direction throughout the universe.
My four-year-old imagination tried to grasp the vastness of this limitless expansive universe. It scared me.
I remember asking, "What's beyond the universe?" He couldn't answer my question. Later in life, I realized God was beyond the universe because He is its Creator.
In many ways, our relationship with our parents impacts how we relate to God as our Father. God understood this when He gave Moses the fifth of the 10 Commandments—honor your father and mother.
This can be a hindrance or a help depending on the nature of our relationship with our father and mother. We tend to view God through the lens or filter of our experience and memories of growing up.
Acceptance and approval are important for our sense of well-being. Children long for and need this from parents, siblings, and grandparents. When they don't receive it from family, they look to others for it.
There's both a sense of peace and joy when we experience acceptance and approval. How much more so when we know God's acceptance and approval.
Many times I've heard music playing in the background at restaurants, doctor's offices, and in some stores. It used to be called Muzak, a mix of pop songs dressed up like an orchestra playing classical music. It was typically bland and monotonous.
Popular Christian music on "family-friendly" radio stations can sound the same way. The same songs played over and over and in modified versions. I can only listen to it for a short while.
