Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:17-18, 20-21 NIV)
A key need for submitting to spiritual leaders is spiritual discernment. It's easy to find fault with a leader's humanity. It's also easy to surrender to a leader's authority and make them responsible for your life.
Both of these attitudes and actions are wrong. Submission is not surrender. We are to surrender our will only to God. Each of us is accountable to Him. We submit to authority as an act of faith in God.
Again, spiritual discernment is required, and we are accountable to God above all. He gives us discernment. It is in Him alone we entrust our lives. ©Word-Strong_2015
