Free From the Law

Photo credit: lightstock.com Don’t you realize, brothers and sisters, that laws have power over people only as long as they are alive? (I’m speaking to people who are familiar with Moses’ Teachings.) For example, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, that marriage law is no longer in effect for her.

So if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she will be called an adulterer. But if her husband dies, she is free from this law, so she is not committing adultery if she marries another man.

In the same way, brothers and sisters, you have died to the laws in Moses’ Teachings through Christ’s body. You belong to someone else, the one who was brought back to life. As a result, we can do what God wants.

While we were living under the influence of our corrupt nature, sinful passions were at work throughout our bodies. Stirred up by the laws in Moses’ Teachings, our sinful passions did things that result in death.

But now we have died to those laws that bound us. God has broken their effect on us so that we are serving in a new spiritual way, not in an old way dictated by written words. (‭Romans‬ ‭7:1-6‬ GW)

I don't see death as a friend, but it has a benefit. It brings a certain freedom. This is not an everyday life and death issue, but a spiritual one.

The relationship believers have with the Lord Jesus is like a marriage, but so was the former covenant relationship called the Law (Moses' Teaching). The idea here is that death to the former relationship governed by the Law frees a person to live in a new relationship. This is the idea of a wife who is free to marry another husband after the first one dies.

Because our relationship with Jesus is based on His life on earth, His death on the cross, and His resurrection, we are set free from the absolute demands of the Old Covenant Law, all of it. This doesn't mean we are free in the sense of having no restraints or boundaries, but free to have a genuine relationship with the Lord.

This is where the idea of marriage comes in. It's a commitment with certain expectations, faithfulness to one another and consideration of each other are included. It takes time to develop a healthy, sustainable marriage, and so our relationship with the Lord needs to develop.

The benefit to us who choose Jesus as our Lord is that we start out with a clean slate, so to speak. We do not need to be hounded by previous relationships and problems (our old life before Jesus), but we need to keep making Him our priority in life each day. ©Word-Strong_2015
